It’s been a bumpy day for Phil Robertson, star of Duck Dynasty and paterfamilias of the family behind Duck Commander, a multimillion dollar company that produces duck-hunting merchandise. In an interview for January’s GQ, the reporter asked Robertson about his view of sin: “’Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men.’” His other remarks were even more graphic, suggesting that “a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus,” but “sin…[is] just not logical.”

The interview, made public on GQ‘s website today, has had potentially disastrous consequences for Robertson’s career. Variety reports that A&E, Duck Dynasty‘s parent channel, has placed Robertson on indefinite filming hiatus following his remarks:

“We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty. His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community.”

The Robertson clan are not private about their faith, often praying together while filming their show, which has made them folk heroes for conservative evangelicals. Phil has been known to preach at duck-calling seminars (yep, they exist), and this isn’t his first time denouncing homosexuality. There are a number of Bible passages that deal with sexual behavior, and the passage Robertson paraphrased in his GQ interview was 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, which says “Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! Fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, sodomites, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, robbers—none of these will inherit the kingdom of God.” The Greek word used for “sodomite” in verse 9 (arsenokoitai) is disputed by scholars, some of whom claim it means “homosexual” and others of whom argue that there was no Greek noun for “homosexual.”

Cultural momentum behind Duck Dynasty has been overwhelming, with 11.8 million viewers for its season 4 premiere. In a country that increasingly supports gay rights, including marriage, how Robertson’s remarks will play out remains to be seen. And after this kerfuffle — and his indefinite filming hiatus — so does he.

An “I Stand With Phil” petition demanding that A&# reinstate Robertson, organized by Faith Driven Consumer, garnered more than 79,00 signatures in the first 10 hours.

“Mr. Robertson’s comments in GQ Magazine are simply reflective of a Biblical view of sexuality, marriage, and family – a view that has stood the test of time for thousands of years and continues to be held by the majority of Americans and today’s world as a whole,” the petition states in part.

“…simply reflective of a Biblical view of sexuality, marriage, and family”

…and slavery, concubines, degradation of women, rape, incest, infanticide, ethnic cleansing…

I would recommend people read the whole interview…both sides of the argument. Yes I wish Phil had used better judgement with his words…but this paragraph is not even the center of the article. I would encourage my evangelical friends let’s not go overboard here…Phil is a big boy…a wealthy big boy. He will be fine. And to my tolerant friends…could you be tolerant? Even to a red neck Christian?

It’s sad, but not surprising that a man who spends his days teaching guerilla tactics to use in the peculiar pastime of waging anti-avian war & engaging in the wholesale massacre of innocent American ducks, would now find it necessary to launch unprovoked attacks upon millions of harmless homosexuals.
    The man is a menace.

  4. Phil was set up. GQ interviewing HIM is just bogus. His comments weren’t “unprovoked”—GQ asked him a question. If A&E, is so LGBT friendly, how did they ever pick up the series. Oh, yeah–because it’s popular. As for “red neck Christian”, the term “red neck” comes from a reference to the necks of people who work outdoors like Phil, picking cotton. Some mean the term “red neck” as a term of derision but every “red neck” I know, takes it as a mark of pride. It’s time to buy some duck calls.

I didn’t mean to offend by my ridiculous remark; I was joking.
I was trying to make light of it, because I know it’s such a sensitive topic, I
was trying to divert by focusing on the ducks -especially AMERICAN ducks.
    HA HA.
To be serious, I think that “freedom of speech ” does not REQUIRE us to
speek, even when asked a question. It’s O.K. to say “I don’t want to talk about
this.” It also means that if people are offened, they are free to say what they wish to say about it. Anything anybody says or does has consequences, and we should be prepared to deal with them.
It’s possible this guy is pretty smart. I had seen stuff about him for a while, but
completely ignored him due to his camo outfits & the title of his show, that lets
you know right off that he murders ducks. I probably would have died never knowing who he is. Now, I inow who he is & so does everybody else. I’m
sure he knew that when he spoke He looks like someone who is looking for attention, but he’s clearly not an idiot.
Now, just bear with me here a minute.
Is there anyone in America who doesn’t know the liberal viewpoint regarding everything. The conservative viewpoint ? The socialist viewpoint ?
Etc. Is there anyone who has never heard of Jesus ? Or Muhammad,or Buddha, or Krishna ? I know there are folks that haven’t heard of the founder of my Faith, Baha u llah, but Bahais are not allowed to proselytize for exactly this reason.
It’s divisive. We have a web-site- if you ask I’ll give you the address.
Bahai’s have a quote “Speak not, unless you have obtained a hearing.”
Now, a site like this is a place where all have obtained a hearing. People know when they come here what to expect.
Here is just a question I am asking. What if people stopped feeling like they
have to give their opinion about everything ? Nobody has anything new to say about anything. And – before anybody jumps- I mean this about all of us- liberals, conservatives, every member of every religion, gays, straights, vegetarians, atheists, Scientologists, sun-worshipers , everybody. We don’t have to speechify about everything There are sites like this for people wo want to talk about this stuff.
There are videos on YouTube about everything, there are e-books, etc
What if, when we got together, we tried to make the world a better place,to support, encourage, comfort, love one another.
Or if not that, just try to have fun together.
    We argue too damn much.
Enough of this with everybody having to take a stand about everything.
Just keep quiet, unless somebody is truly interested.
    Live & let live.
This concludes my speech about the wisdom of not speaking.

Well, i have a thought which promotes the value of sites such as Toledo Favs. Not so long ago ( a few weeks) I saw myself as the voice of the left ( YAY !!! , and I saw another writer as the Ridiculous voice of the right (hissssssss) .
Then, we ran across shared experience .(Silence ).
I was afraid of this person, what was represented, of it’s possible effect upon society, etc.,.
And, suddenly, something in common, And I was changed. If that’s not the purpose of this site, I don’t know the reason.
We all have something in common.
i was afraid of this person. but, the commonality has been found.
I have valid points to make for my position, and I will continue to make them.
But, there is now, common ground.
Outside of forums like these, I believe that taking a public position is just posturing, but , from inside our forum, the “face of the right wing” has been humanized, neutralizing anger. I
Let’s stop being angry. I think we all love God.
I think it would be great if we could move past rage & I think it would be great if we let it slide when it’s was just too emotional to do so.
I will always be left, but, also, as Jon Stewart, suggests “I’m sure that the right is not Hitler”.
    I think.
    Anyway, I want to relax.
    Let’s try to get along..
Maybe I’m selling out, but it is, after all, Christmas.

…perhaps a little healing ointment could be helpful…….
    “For our personal advancement in virtue and truth one quality is sufficient, namely: love;
    to advance humanity there must be two: love and intelligence;
to accomplish the Great Work there must be three: love, intelligence, & activity.
And yet love is ever the root and the source.”
