Beverly Bingle of Toledo was ordained as Toledo's first female priest in the Roman Catholic Womenpriests movement, a reform group that claims apostolic succession. The Vatican does not recognize women's ordination as valid and has ruled that women who seek ordination and those who help them are excommunicated by their actions.
Reverend Bingle will celebrate Mass at 5:30 p.m. Sundays in her new church, Holy Spirit Catholic Community, meeting weekly at Unity of Toledo 3535 Executive Parkway, Toledo.

Thanks to David Yonke for capturing the spirit of this ordination in this video. It was a splendid service and a beginning point for a larger discussion of the role of women in the Catholic Church. The theme, ‘Fear Not’ was evident in the readings, the songs and in the prayers of the service.
It is truly sad that fear overshadowed this event as many people, especially clergy, were afraid to attend due to reprisals from the bishop for their attendance. It is hard to imagine that a religious organization uses fear to keep its members in line, especially here in the 21st century.
