The United States is threatening an imminent strike against Syrian military targets in response to Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad’s reported use of chemical weapons against civilians.
A panel of theologians and policy experts interviewed by the Religion News Service reached differing conclusions about whether a military attack against Syria would meet the criteria for a “Just War.”
Prof. Stanley Hauerwas of Duke University, for one, said the United States is appointing itself “the world’s policeman.”
William Galston of the Brookings Institution said we have an obligation to protect human life and “if we do nothing, nothing will change and the slaughter of civilians will continue indefinitely.”
